Looking to find something really exciting? We’ve got some hidden gems on our list. Consider red Burgundy from 2010, for example - a stunningly good year. In the words of Antonio Galloni:
“Overall, I am thrilled with the 2010 vintage. The wines are racy, show fabulous minerality and are very true to site... the vintage embodies all of the qualities that make red Burgundy one of the world’s most compelling wines.”
Why was 2010 such a stellar year? Wilst the weather provided its challenges, overall it produced a small crop of excellent fruit. The early part of the year is important for quantity, and cold weather during flowering reduced potential yields. However, August and September are all-important for quality and, with the vines relatively unburdened by excess fruit, the grapes that did grow were of fabulous quality.
Not only was the weather favourable, we also saw a number of younger producers really starting to hit their stride in this vintage – Virgile Lignier and Guillaume Tardy to name just two. In addition, established growers including Hubert Lignier and Harmand-Geoffroy performed exceptionally well and from Borgougne Rouges through to Premiers and Grands Crus, there is real value to be had.
In many cases, these wines are drinking beautifully already; many of them tasted almost ready to go straight from the barrel, thanks to their wonderfully ripe, sweet fruit. However they have the concentration and structure required to go a good distance so fear not! Those who are lucky enough to have 1990s and the like in their cellars will know how well these wines age, especially with the acid and fruit profile sported by the ‘10s. Drink over the coming 5-10 years and enjoy.
