Philipponat is a Champagne brand with a difference; it's a niche product with a hugely loyal following and unusually low production. It's top wine – clos des Goisses – is produced in batches of between 3000 and 40,000 bottles. That's, at most, less than 1% of Dom Perignon's production.

It's a true connoisseur's choice and has a style very much of its own. The Clos des Goisses vineyard is located such that it enjoys average temperature slightly higher than elsewhere in Champagne. This means that traditionally weak Champagne vintages may be great here.

There's high demand for this low volume wine and it ages magnificently well. Picking up older cases can be tricky so buy young and cellar or buy mature when you have the opportunity. Try drinking in a Bordeaux glass, not flute, allowing the wine to fully open up. ...and this is serious food wine; not just a delicious aperitif.
