Opening statement from senior management

Modern slavery is a complex and multi-faceted crime and tackling it requires everyone to play a part. BI opposes modern slavery in all its forms. We are committed to preventing exploitation and human trafficking and to protecting our workforce through the implementation of effective systems for transparency in all our business dealings.

Structure of the organisation

BI is a fine wine and spirits merchant, providing customers with the rarest and most exceptional wines and spirits in the world. Established in 1997, BI has offices in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Los Angeles.

Our principal business activities comprise

  • Wine sourcing: we source wines and spirits from third party suppliers in the UK and around the world
  • Marketing and sales: we market and sell our wines and spirits to customers and businesses through our own dedicated marketing and sales teams.

Planning how we assess and manage risk

We recognise that our supply chain is our biggest risk area for exposure to modern slavery. We operate in a sector where our suppliers may make use of seasonal workers employed on a variety of types of contracts. This is a high-risk area in terms of the legislation.

As part of our initiatives to identify and mitigate risk, we are in the process of implementing systems to:

  • Identify and assess potential risk areas in our supply chains
  • Where practical, mitigate the risk of slavery and human trafficking occurring in our supply chains
  • Monitor potential risk areas in our supply chains
  • Protect whistle blowers.


As part of our commitment to combating modern slavery, we are implementing an Anti-Slavery Policy and have implemented a Recruitment Policy and a Whistle Blowing Policy.

We understand that we need to raise awareness of modern slavery within our business as well as amongst our supply chain and are working towards ensuring a higher level of understanding of the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking in our business. Our commitments:

  • To prohibit the use of forced, compulsory or trafficked labour, or anyone held in slavery or servitude, whether adults or children;
  • To review our supply base to identify high risk areas which raise a concern against commitments
  • To make sure our suppliers are aware of our commitments and seek that they adhere to the same high standards
  • To conduct robust checks on any new employee including eligibility to work in the UK to safeguard against human trafficking or individuals being forced to work against their will.

Due Diligence

BI does not and will not knowingly support or deal with any business involved in slavery or human trafficking. We are in the process of implementing procedures to complete due diligence on our suppliers, where practicable, to satisfy ourselves that we are trading with a reputable organisation. BI expects all those in its supply chain to be opposed to slavery and human trafficking.

This statement is made in accordance with section 54(1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and constitutes BI Wine & Spirit's slavery and human trafficking statement for the financial year commencing 2018 and ending 2019.
