The Best Beef in the World

A few weeks ago our Chairman Lord Spencer of Alresford and myself took our partners and a fantastic small group off to visit the home of Brunello di Montalcino.  Once a year we try and visit somewhere in the wine world which will be fun, interesting and very beautiful.  This year’s visit was all of those things, but that is for another blog; this one is just about the beef.

On Sunday we ended up high up in the hills eating the best beef in the world.  From the famed white cow and a particular herd, this master chef and restaurateur cooks his beef steak florentina roasted on the bone to perfection and served with a magnum of Brunello.  I am told that his meat finds it way by allocation to Hawksmoor restaurants.  It really was the best beef I have ever eaten and that includes Kobe beef.

Back home last Saturday night I barbecued the ribs I sneaked back (1.5kg). Simply me and the Missus.  What to drink... I went this time for the 1982 Leoville Las Cases.  Remarkably the wine is still young so it’s essential to give it time in the decanter.  Sweet, balanced, and with Asian spices, it is utterly beautiful, as was the steak.  Served on a beautiful evening by the river... I am very lucky indeed.
