Bordeaux En Primeur 2018: New Releases Thursday 9th May

by Giles Cooper (Head of Marketing & PR)

After another pleasant bank holiday in the sun for our Bordelais brethren we have more releases today.

The biggest name among these is Pape Clement at GBP 795. One of the more hotly anticipated releases of the 2018 campaign, the 2018 is a dense, powerful wine which will reward the patient – rich and hedonistic, yet classically structured and with layers of mineral complexity, it will unquestionably go the distance. It has some exceptional scores across the board and represents a pretty decent price, bearing in mind it has the potential to eclipse the 2016 and is well below the current price of the 2009 and 2010. There is also a tiny amount of their white available at GBP 1185.

A wine we were most excited about was the 2018 Beau-Sejour Becot, released today at GBP 552, which has dazzled everyone who has come into contact with it. It has gained wild plaudits from Lisa Perrotti-Brown (“the palate is laden with latent energy”) and Antonio Galloni (“an utterly captivating Saint-Émilion”).Having tasted the wine again yesterday in the office, our original score of 93-94 was a point or two too low. The price is also very friendly compared to its more famous neighbours.

The first of the Mouton stable, D’Armailhac, is also available at GBP 420. Benefiting from all the skills of the vineyard and winemaking team at Mouton, and being blessed with exceptional terroir bordering not only Mouton itself, but Lafite, Carruades and Pontet Canet, D’Armailhac offers very good quality at a fraction of the price of its more famous sibling (and near-neighbours!).

Other releases include the ‘entry’ wines from the Von Neipperg stable, of which Clos de L’Oratoire was fantastic and represents a snip at just GBP 340.

Having followed COVID-19 Government advice, we have temporarily closed our London office until further notice, we are however operating as normal. Click here to read more
